Lots of writing and genuine progress

In early January I wrote the time for “just writing” was over and that I needed to get back to my PhD and that’s pretty much what I’ve been doing.

View from my study at our beach house. Much better view than my desk at home or at Uni!

More than 10,000 words written. My third of six or possibly seven case studies about family wine businesses now largely written, and the chapter on the first stage of my research completed, even in the eyes of my Supervisors!

I can see potential answers to my research question. I can see a potential contribution. Not a Nobel Prize contribution, more the grain of sand, but at least I can see a potential contribution.

I have been a good Higher Degree Research student and attended a number of research seminars. This week I heard about humour in earnings calls by public companies – yes I should get out more! I have been to many of my colleagues research presentations; it’s always great to see how well my cohort is progressing, because a PhD is hard.

nfact a PhD is much harder and more demanding than I ever expected. The constant questioning of what I’m writing. Is it supportable. The process inches along, but is in its own way rewarding.

I can see the finish line. I think my goal of a completed manuscript by Christmas is achievable, particularly if I don’t need a seventh case study.

Our regular Tuesday night “Shut and Write” Sessions are progressing well. They are ninety minute “Zoom” video conference with two of my study buddies. The sessions provide an opportunity to chat about progress, occasionally vent, and most importantly write.

At my proncipal supervisors suggestion I have instituted regular, fortnightly, meetings as a check-in and as he is also a cyclist we have been riding regularly. The riding has got me out of the house on a Saturday morning for a ride into the Adelaide Hills. Some chat about the research area but most importantly I’m getting fitter and that’s helping with focus as are my regular gym sessions.

Me on the left!

My blog however has suffered. I have used the time I could have been blogging on my research. That said it’s been nice to grab 30 minutes and write a post.

Hi Michael. I’m finally catching up on what I’ve missed over the past two months. It’s good to hear that your PhD is going well – I admire your dedication in taking it on, and I hope it reaches your desired conclusion within your target timeframe. Then you can have your life back!
