No News is Good News

I decided in late 2012 that I would have a news sabbatical. It was a time when the Australian political situation was at an all time low, just depressing every time I turned the Radio or TV on. It was worse when I read a Newspaper!

I decided it’s Christmas, Summer and I wanted to enjoy the holiday break. For me “No news was going to be Good News”. My approach was to tune out, read a book, watch the cricket, ride my bike and be oblivious to local and world events. It was awesome – so relaxing!

This Christmas I decided I’d do the same. A two week news sabbatical. I continued reading my book, revelled in Arsenal’s continued good form, enjoyed every minute of the cricket and had some great rides.

Unfortunately with a return to work it was back to checking in with the world and being able to confirm that “No News is Good news”.

So It’s back to work but ….

It was back to work today after the Christmas Break.

I love the Christmas New Year period, it’s totally relaxing, the phone doesn’t ring except when someone wants to catch up for a drink and there are no emails!

This year we didn’t go to far spending our time between home and our beach house.

What could be better than few days at Second Valley , South Australia’s best beach.

Just so quiet and peaceful in the lead up to Christmas. A great place to walk the dog, ride the bike and just take it easy.

Then there was Adelaide’s Central Market. It’s a unique experience, right in the centre of the city. Awesome fruit, vegetables, meats and cheese. Sure wine tasting is fun, but spending time at The Smelly Cheese Stall is just as good – always better to do this on my own so my wife can’t see how much I’ve spent!

Christmas Eve at the Central Market is complete bedlam, but such fun. Happy people shopping for their Christmas goodies. One of those not to be missed Adelaide experiences at Christmas or anytime of the year.

Then it was Christmas breakfast, which is my favourite part of the day as it’s just with our children. This time it also included my dughter’s partner a new and important member of the family. We always have Pantone, a Christmas tradition, with Nutella and Mascarpone. It’s definitely a Christmas only treat, truly yummy. After lunch it was back to the beach for French Champagne on the deck with some cheese and a delightful sunset.

Apart from some great riding across the break I did plenty of writing, something I am finding so relaxing – even my thesis proposal! That involved a lot of research and writing quite a structured piece for my potential supervisor to read. I also enjoyed working on my blog. The timing of the Zero to Hero Challengecouldn’t have been better.

As for eating and drinking there was plenty of that! New Year’s Eve was a feast topped off by some amazing mango sorbet and a walk home on a very hot night!

My favourite meal was the catalunya seafood dish and of course my favourite drink was Aperol Spritz of which we had an ample supply!

I also watched a lot of soccer!
For me, it started watching Arsenal V Chelsea at the beach on a glorious sunny morning, whilst it was a dreary wet windy night in London, not the best game of the break which I think goes to Manchester City v Liverpool, although Arsenal beating Tottenham was pretty close ( I am an Arsenal supporter after all). I also took in a couple of Adelaide United home games cross the break, a win against Newcastle United, which included a cameo from Emile Heskey and then a full house when Adelaide United drew with Sydney and the opportunity to see Del Peiro play.

Of course there was also The Ashes – 5 – 0! The Boxing Day Test for all its hype is absolutely required viewing whilst lazing around on the day after Christmas. It really is an Australian tradition.

As I’m not a traditionalist the chance to go to the 20/20 also wasn’t to be missed.

Also there was great music. I rediscovered Badly Drawn Boy, had a fantastic night listening to 70s music, watched lots of music videos and started to ready myself for the Springsteen Concert in my home town.

So as I reflect on it, a very enjoyable 16 days all spent in fabulous South Australia, a time with friends and family. What could be better?

Springsteen & I – A Fan’s Review

I saw my rock and roll past flash before my eyes. I saw something else: I saw rock and roll’s future and its name is Bruce Springsteen.
– Jon Landau, May 1974.

Warning: Spoiler Alert

Springsteen & I pays homage to a true Rock Icon!

This is a fan’s movie, made by fans about their (and my) rock hero.

Icon and iconic are terms bandied around too much these days – one hit and you’re there, but with Springsteen it was after his third album that he truly moved to iconic status and it’s Born to Run that are my three words to describe Springsteen.

Welcome 2014 – Happy New Year!

So this is 2014!

Just a few hours in and I am feeling so energized about how the year will go. Not sure why? Maybe it’s the long walk home from a New Year’s Eve Party when our cab didn’t show up or that I’m having a lazy New Year’s Day sitting on the couch watching music videos and reading blogs that I follow on my Reader.

I loved so many posts, but these two stood out

Teaching an old dog new tricks

– Reflections of a fellow traveller

Empty Garden the Tragic Death of John Lennon in Song

– Capturing a memorable moment in my life.

I worked on my Facebook Fan Page – maybe someone else will find it in 2014!

Found a fantastic prompt for posts 365 Writing Prompts. Wonder how many I will use this year?

So what’s in store for 2014?

Quite likely my last full year of working in Professional Services. I’m definitely up for the challenge!
Starting Honours in Finance, hopefully the first step to a future career in Academia.
More articles for The Adelaide Review.
Perhaps some success for my sporting teams – The Crows, Arsenal and Sturt.
Springsteen’s first visit to Adelaide – I never thought would happen!

I’m so looking forward to 2014.

Happy New Year!

Christmas Music

Earlier in the week my wife said it didn’t feel like Christmas. As we discussed this further it became obvious why – a lack of Bing! That’s right, not Bling but Bing!

20131224-095614.jpg

For her Christmas is synonymous with White Christmas. For me it’s pretty similar and for about a week in each year, I look forward to Christmas favourites. I actively seek them out from my own CD rack, Pandora, Spotify and on the TV. Foxtel obliged this year with their 20 favourite songs most of which were also in my favourites as well.

So along with everyone else I thought I’d have a go at my favourite Christmas Songs.

Band Aid – Do they know its Christmas and John Lennon’s Happy Christmas (War is Over) are my quintessential Modern Christmas Classics.

White Christmas – Bing’s is simply the best!

More Bing with Do you Hear what I Hear.

I have always loved Andy William’s Little Drummer Boy although Bing and David Bowie’s version is pretty good.

Kylie’s version of Santa Baby is a hoot! I had always assumed it was originally sung by Marilyn Monroe, but infact the originalwas sung by Ertha Kitt.

Springsteen’s Santa Claus is Coming to Town. I remember the first time I heard it was on a very scratchily recorded bootleg in the 70s. Maybe one year I will see Springsteen at Christmas and see it sung live! Until then I will have to be satisfied by the numerous versions on YouTube.

Mary’s Boy Child by Bony M is on my list; it’s certainly a blast from the past.

I’m not a big Mariah Carey fan, but make an exception of her at Christmas with All I want for Christmas is You

The Pogues A Fairytale in New Yorkis one that I have played pretty constantly in the run upto this Christmas. Whilst not in any way uplifting it is the most played Christmas a Song in Britain this century.

Littls Saint Nick by The Beach Boys reminds me of Summer Nights at one of my close friends place.

It used to be a family tradition that I would get a Chieftains CD at Christmas, which one year was The Bells of Dublin. A collection of Celtic songs with a Christmas theme and regularly gets a spin on Christmas morning.

I also love Tori Amos’s Midwinter Graces with Star of Wonder my favourite.

From an Australian perspective it’s hard to go past Paul Kelly’s How to Make Gravy .

Pretty much everyone has had a go at a Christmas Song. In my search I found songs by Jimmy Durante, Gene Autry, Nat King Cole, The Beatles, Wings, O’55, Miley Cyrus, Rod Stewart, Destiny’s Child, Tegan and Sara, Elmo, The Muppets and the list goes on.

I also love the traditional carols Hark the Herald Angels Sing and Come all ye Faithful but have to join the majority in saying that Silent Night is my favourite carol.

What’s your favourite?
