Are Cyclists like Cats on a Rainy day?

Our Cat!

Our Cat!

I was struck by a thought as I walked back from University on a wet cold Adelaide winter’s day.

Are Cyclists like Cats on a Rainy day?

On rainy days our cat wanders from window to window seeing if it is raining outside each. I found myself effectively doing the same on my walk home. It wasn’t raining behind me which was towards the coast but it was in the hills which were in front of me. So, maybe a flat ride might be OK? Then once home the sun was shining out to the north – maybe that was the direction for a ride?

In any event, shortly thereafter the wind came up, the clouds took over and down came the rain. Like our cat everywhere I looked there was no respite. Another day without a ride.

As a result, just 25kms on the bike in the last 10 days but it has enabled me to spend hours and hours on my thesis. Not a bad thing as a recent discussion with the Honours Co-ordinator confirmed that I have just 12 weeks to finish it. With that thought has come the first hint of panic. Continue reading

So near and yet so far …. Second Valley

We are privileged to have a beach house at idilyc Second Valley just 90kms from the centre of Adelaide. Its a stunning location with a gorgeous beach.

From our beach house balcony you can see the city. Infact when they used to play night games of AFL at AAMI Stadium you could see the lights, yet try and get anything to it from Adelaide and you would think you were in some remote location on the other side of the world.

You can see the city from here!

You can see the city from here!

Recently we tried to have a bench top delivered and the quote was roughly double the cost of having the same item delivered to Bejing!

There is a point to this…

On Friday I headed out to watch the 3rd stage of the Tour Down Under. Continue reading

Let’s face it, I’m a petrol head!

We live about 250 metres from Adelaide’s Street Circuit. Each year in late February it comes alive to the sounds of V8 Supercars. For many it’s a time to get out of the city, but for me it’s an added bonus of living in the city.

Adelaide for a short while hosted an F1 Grand Prix which was lost to Melbourne quite controversially in the late 1990s. The loss of the race is something South Australians still regard as “dirty darts”, Continue reading

Springsteen – He’s in my Hometown

It’s only eleven months since after the best part of forty years I saw Bruce Springsteen again and this time in my hometown of Adelaide.

This is the best concert I’ve seen since I saw Springsteen last year and that was the best concert I’d ever been too!

To say I am a fan would be a gross understatement. Just thinking of the concert whilst I write this post sends shivers down my spine. I’m sitting in a plane going back to Perth for the second time in the week listening to The Boss and the memories flood back.

It was another stinking hot night in Adelaide and

Too Hot even for a Beer!

What a contrast between the Northern and Southern Hemisphere. The photo of the dog in the snow (from craftingandcupcakery.com) provides such a contrast to the weather in my hometown of Adelaide, South Australia.

Adelaide is having one of its hottest ever spells. Temperatures in the 40s everyday so far this week and more to come. Our local newspaper is prone to hyperbole but today’s headline was probably pretty reasonable. Yesterday was an absolute shocker – 45C plus, lightening in the hills, numerous bushfires (thankfully no one was hurt and no significant property damage) but – Oh My! Today was only 43C!

Having always lived in Adelaide, hot summers are something I am used too. As kids we didn’t have air conditioning, just a fan and on really hot nights we slept outside on our back lawn. Our days were indispersed with visits to the beach.

Today, Continue reading
